Major renovation of rail infrastructure between Luxembourg and Howald

For its client CFL, Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois, ETF Luxembourg is fitting out the railway marshalling yard at Luxembourg station, as well as a section of the Storage and Maintenance Centre.

In Luxembourg, the number of passengers using the train has doubled in almost 20 years. To keep pace with this development, CFL has undertaken major work to optimise its network. This is particularly the case on the border line between Luxembourg – Bettembourg – Thionville. Faced with major delays and heavy traffic, the Luxembourg infrastructure manager has decided to build a new line between Howald and Bettembourg in addition to the existing one.

The work carried out by ETF Luxembourg forms part of this vast project and consists of :

  • Track work on a second passenger platform at Howald peripheral station and the connection to the new Luxembourg-Bettembourg line
  • The adaptation of track facilities at the Luxembourg marshalling yard.
  • Adaptation of the track facilities for the southern access to the CRM.

The overall project involves renewing 11 km of track and 49 switches. In total, this will involve almost 35,000 hours of work in different phases between January 2024 and August 2025.

ETF is carrying out the following work: removal of the old track installations, supply and installation of new rails, sleepers and ballast, followed by ballasting, tamping, stabilisation, welding, release and grinding of the new installations.

This is a major and structuring project for the ETF Luxembourg agency, which can count on its know-how and expertise to meet this challenge. It can also count on the support of the Travaux Mécanisés agency, which will be lending a hand with the tamping operations.
